About Blazeon
Blazeon came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, published by Atlus. It was part of that wave of early 90s shooters on the console, a time when developers were figuring out how to push the hardware with fast paced action and detailed sprites. The game doesn't have the immediate name recognition of some other titles from that year, but it has a specific look and a particular set of rules that make it stand out in memory.
You pilot a small, nimble spacecraft through a series of side scrolling and vertically scrolling stages, tasked with destroying an alien bio-weapon. Your main weapon is a rapid firing shot, but the signature mechanic is the option ball. This floating orb follows your ship and can be set to attack in different formations; you can have it shoot forward, lock it in place to act as a stationary turret, or have it orbit you as a defensive shield. The levels are dense with enemies and environmental hazards, demanding quick switching between these attack modes to survive. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is considerable, with screen filling bosses that require precise pattern recognition. It feels like a constant test of your ability to manage your position and your option's behavior under heavy fire.
