About Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball
Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Hudson Soft. It was part of that early wave of SNES titles that tried to push beyond standard sports simulations, mixing familiar mechanics with something a little more chaotic. You could find it on the same shelves as games like Super Mario World, but it was aiming for a completely different kind of player.
You control a team of five players in a top-down view, moving from screen to screen across a court divided into sections. The main goal is to score baskets, but the real focus is on the combat; you can punch and shove opponents to steal the ball, and you collect power-ups that grant temporary weapons like bombs and rockets. The game is fast and often difficult, with aggressive computer opponents that constantly pressure you. It feels less like a pure sport and more like a frantic brawl where a basketball just happens to be involved.
