Best of the Best: Championship Karate on SNES is one of those fighting games that feels like it got lost in the shuffle—not quite Street Fighter, not quite Mortal Kombat, but it’s got its own weird charm. You pick from a roster of fighters (some look like they wandered in from a bad martial arts movie), and the controls are simple enough—jabs, kicks, and the occasional spinning backfist if you’re lucky.
The pixel art is decent for its time, though some of the animations are stiff—your guy does this weird shuffle when moving forward that never stops being funny. The real challenge? Timing. Block too early, and you eat a roundhouse to the face. Too late, same result. There’s something satisfying about landing a clean combo, even if the AI sometimes cheats like crazy in later fights.
It’s not the deepest fighter out there, but if you’re into ‘90s nostalgia or just want to see a guy in a gi yell while doing a questionable jump kick, it’s worth a few rounds. Just don’t expect to master it in an afternoon.
