Battle Chess is a chess video game released in 1988 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed and published by Interplay Productions, it belongs to the board and strategy game genres, presenting a fantasy themed interpretation of traditional chess. The game is viewed from a top down perspective on a standard chess board.

Players control the white or black army in a game of chess, with the objective of checkmating the opponent's king. The core rules and piece movements follow conventional chess, supported by an opening library of 30,000 moves and ten selectable computer skill levels for solo play. The primary distinguishing feature is its visual presentation: each piece is represented by a small animated character that walks to its new square. When a piece captures another, the two figures engage in a brief, unique combat animation specific to that pairing of attacker and defender. These sequences depict the pieces fighting with weapons or magic in a stylized manner.

The game offers multiple presentation modes. The default setting shows the full 3D board with all animations enabled. Players can also switch to a two dimensional, non animated display that functions as a standard digital chess board. The MS DOS version uses digitized sound effects for the battles, playable through the PC speaker without requiring additional hardware. Battle Chess supports play against another human opponent or against the computer's artificial intelligence across its various difficulty settings.
