Batman Returns on SNES is one of those licensed games that actually gets it right. You start off punching thugs in a snowy Gotham alley, and within minutes you're dodging chainsaws, chucking Batarangs, and getting sucker-punched by circus freaks. The side-scrolling brawler action feels weighty—Batman's punches have this satisfying thud to them, and the way his cape flaps when you jump never gets old.
What surprised me was how moody it feels for a 16-bit game. The music's all ominous synth, and the levels actually look like Tim Burton's weirdo gothic version of Gotham. You'll fight through the Red Triangle Gang (those creepy clown guys from the movie), take on Catwoman in this ridiculous neon-lit nightclub, and eventually face off against Penguin in his ridiculous duckmobile. Some of the hit detection's a little janky, but that's part of the retro charm. If you grew up with this one, it still holds up way better than most movie tie-ins from the era.
Just don't expect an easy ride—the final boss fight will test your patience in the best/worst way.
