Bastard!! on SNES is one of those weird, over-the-top dark fantasy RPGs that feels like it was pulled straight from a heavy metal album cover. You play as Dark Schneider, this ridiculously overpowered sorcerer who basically struts through dungeons obliterating everything in his path with spells that take up half the screen.
The combat’s a mix of real-time hacking and spellcasting—hold down the button to charge up your magic, then watch entire enemy groups explode in flames. It’s janky in that classic 16-bit way, but there’s something satisfying about how absurdly powerful you feel. The pixel art’s got this grungy, detailed look, especially the bosses, which are all horns and glowing eyes.
Fair warning: the translation’s rough (it’s an old Japan-only release), and the difficulty spikes hard if you don’t grind a little. But if you’re into obscure SNES action-RPGs with attitude, it’s a blast. Just don’t expect a deep story—it’s mostly an excuse to set things on fire while a synth-metal soundtrack blares in the background.
