BS Super Tsume Shougi 1000 is one of those deep-cut SNES games that’ll either hook you immediately or make you realize shougi (Japanese chess) isn’t your thing. You’re basically thrown into a mountain of 1,000 pre-set puzzles where the goal is to checkmate the opponent in a set number of moves—no frills, just pure, punishing strategy.

The computer doesn’t mess around, either. At first, the early puzzles feel manageable, but halfway through, you’ll start sweating over piece placements. The board’s tiny sprites don’t help much when you’re second-guessing whether that silver general should push forward or hang back. Still, there’s something satisfying about finally cracking a puzzle after staring at it for 20 minutes.

If you’re into shougi or just love brutal logic games, this one’s a time sink. Just don’t expect hand-holding.
