Axelay came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Konami. It was part of that wave of games that really pushed what the SNES could do with its visual and audio hardware, standing out among other shooters at the time.

You pilot a lone ship through six stages of alien-infested territory. Your goal is to destroy the enemy armada and its command ship. The game switches between two perspectives: vertically scrolling stages where you dodge waves of enemies and horizontally scrolling levels that require more precise navigation through tight corridors. You collect power-ups to cycle between three primary weapons for each perspective, like a spread shot or homing missiles, and you also have a stock of screen-clearing smart bombs for emergencies. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is substantial, demanding quick reflexes and smart weapon choices. It feels sharp and responsive, a game where every successful run through a chaotic screen is a genuine accomplishment.
