I first played Asterix on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1993. It was developed and published by Infogrames, a familiar name from that era. This was a time when licensed platformers were common, and this game fit right in with its colorful, cartoonish look that felt true to the comics.

You control Asterix, the famous Gaulish warrior, as he fights through Roman camps and forests to rescue kidnapped villagers. The main goal is straightforward: punch and kick your way through legions of Roman soldiers across side scrolling levels. A key mechanic is finding and using Obelix as a temporary power up; he smashes through enemies and obstacles you cannot. You also collect golden laurel wreaths hidden in barrels and behind scenery. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially with the limited continues. Playing it feels like a cheerful, if sometimes punishing, brawl through a living comic book.
