About Ashita No Joe
I first played Ashita No Joe on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. It was developed and published by Wave Corp, a company that released a number of titles during that period of the SNES's life. The game is based on the boxing manga and anime, which was a familiar property at the time, and it arrived when sports games were becoming more diverse on the console.
You control Joe Yabuki, an aspiring boxer, through a series of matches. The main objective is to train your fighter and win bouts to climb the ranks. The gameplay is split between a training mode, where you build up Joe's stats through mini games, and the actual boxing matches. During fights, you use a combination of punches, blocks, and dodges, managing your stamina carefully. The pacing is deliberate, with the training segments being just as important as the fights themselves. It can be quite difficult, as opponents become more aggressive and your own stamina depletes quickly if you are not strategic. The feeling of landing a clean punch after a well timed dodge is genuinely satisfying.
