About Arcana
I first played Arcana on the Super Nintendo back in 1992. It was developed by HAL Laboratory, the same folks who later made Kirby, but this was one of their earlier RPGs for the system. It came out when the SNES library was still growing, offering a different kind of fantasy adventure compared to the bigger names at the time.
You control a card magician named Rooks, exploring the world from a first-person perspective, moving screen by screen through dungeons and towns. Your main goal is to stop an evil force by gathering the four elemental seals. Combat is turn-based; you issue commands to your party of up to three characters, using swords, bows, and a variety of spell cards you collect. The dungeons are maze-like and filled with traps, requiring careful mapping and resource management. The game has a deliberate pace and can be quite challenging, especially with its random encounters. Playing it feels like slowly uncovering a dense, illustrated storybook where every battle matters.
