About Appleseed
Appleseed came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Visit Co. It was part of that wave of action games on the SNES that tried to blend different genres, standing alongside many other titles that experimented with mechanics beyond pure platforming or shooting. The game is based on the manga of the same name, placing you into its sci-fi world.
You control Deunan Knute, navigating through side-scrolling levels and overhead map areas. Your main goal is to fight through hostile forces and complete missions across a war-torn city. The gameplay mixes run-and-gun shooting with exploration; you use a standard pistol and can pick up other weapons like a shotgun or grenade launcher. A key mechanic is the strategic use of your partner Briareos, a cyborg who can provide heavy fire support. The pacing is methodical, often requiring you to clear rooms of enemies and find key items to progress. The difficulty can be unforgiving, with limited continues and aggressive enemy placements. Playing Appleseed feels like managing a two-person squad in a tense, destructible environment.
