About Another World
Another World came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Delphine Software. It was a game that stood out on the platform, not for its sprawling levels or complex mechanics, but for its stark, cinematic presentation. At the time, it felt less like a typical SNES cartridge and more like an interactive science fiction short film.
You control Lester, a young physicist thrown into a dangerous alien landscape after a lab experiment goes wrong. Your main goal is simply to survive and find a way home. The gameplay unfolds screen by screen; you solve environmental puzzles, evade monstrous creatures, and occasionally use a laser pistol you acquire. There are no tutorials or lengthy explanations. You learn by dying, often repeatedly, as you figure out the precise timing needed to jump a chasm or outsmart a guard. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, because a single mistake can send you back to the start of a sequence. Playing it feels like navigating a hostile, beautifully drawn comic book where every panel could be your last.
