Alcahest came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was part of that wave of action RPGs on the SNES that tried to blend fast combat with exploration, sitting alongside other games from that period without necessarily breaking new ground. You control a young warrior named Alyson, tasked with stopping an ancient evil known as the Alcahest from consuming the world. The game is structured around exploring interconnected areas, moving screen by screen through forests, towns, and multi-level dungeons.

You spend most of your time hacking at monsters with your sword, which can be powered up to shoot projectiles, and navigating environmental puzzles. A key mechanic is the ability to absorb the souls of defeated bosses, granting you new magical abilities that are essential for progression. The pacing is brisk, with constant enemy encounters and a moderate difficulty that demands quick reflexes for some of the boss fights.
