About Airborne Ranger
Airborne Ranger is a shooter game released in 1988 for the MS-DOS platform. It was developed and published by MicroProse Software, Inc. The game presents a top-down perspective and casts the player as a United States Army airborne ranger operating behind enemy lines.
Players control a single ranger who is parachuted into one of three environmental settings: arctic, desert, or temperate. Each mission begins with a planning phase where the player studies a map to plot a route toward a primary objective. The core gameplay involves navigating the terrain while avoiding or confronting various hazards. This includes crawling through trenches, circumventing minefields, and engaging enemy soldiers and bunkers. A notable feature for its time is the inclusion of missions that encourage stealth, where players must remain undetected, silently eliminate guards, or use disguises to proceed.
The game offers two distinct modes. Practice mode allows players to attempt individual missions independently. Veteran mode structures the experience as a campaign, where a series of missions are played in sequence. Success in this mode can result in earning medals and promotions for the player's character. All missions across both modes can be adjusted to several different difficulty levels, affecting the challenge presented by enemy forces and environmental obstacles.
