Act Raiser came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Quintet. It was one of those early SNES titles that felt different from a lot of other games at the time, mixing two distinct styles of play into one cohesive adventure.

You control a deity, simply called The Master, who awakens to a world overrun by monsters. Your goal is to reclaim the land and guide humanity back to prosperity. The game alternates between two main phases. In the side-scrolling action stages, you descend into a statue and fight through platforming levels with a sword, clearing out monsters and defeating bosses. Back in the overhead simulation mode, you use miracles like lightning or sunlight to protect your followers, direct their expansion by clearing forests and swamps, and help them build towns and farms. The pacing shifts between the tense, combat-heavy platforming and the more thoughtful, strategic management of your growing civilization. It creates a satisfying rhythm of conquering evil and nurturing life.
