Ever played an RPG where you're technically the hero, but everyone else is kind of a jerk about it? That's 7th Saga in a nutshell. You pick one of seven characters—mage, knight, demon, whatever—and set off to collect runes like a good little chosen one. Except the other six "heroes" you didn't pick? They're out there too, and they'll straight-up fight you for the runes instead of teaming up like reasonable people.

The SNES version was already brutal (seriously, the difficulty spikes are legendary), but this hack tweaks things—balances some characters, makes the early grind less painful. Still, don't expect a cozy adventure. The soundtrack slaps, though, and there's something weirdly satisfying about watching your elf get ambushed by a rival hero who decided today was betrayal day.

It's the kind of game where you save before talking to anyone, just in case.
