Accolade released 3 Jigen Kakutou Ballz for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. It was a time when many developers were experimenting with polygonal graphics on the 16-bit hardware, and this game was one of those attempts. The Japanese version, which I played, is essentially the same core game as Ballz but runs on a faster ROM speed, which makes a noticeable difference in the overall responsiveness.

You control a fighter composed of spheres, engaging in one-on-one battles across various 3D-rendered arenas. The main objective is to defeat your opponent by depleting their health bar, either by knocking them out or winning by decision after the timer runs out. The signature mechanics are the pre-rendered 3D character models that rotate as you move and the unique control scheme where you use the shoulder buttons to punch and kick. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially against later opponents who block and counter frequently. It feels like a quirky, slightly janky experiment that is more interesting for its technical ambition than its polished execution.
