Zork III: The Dungeon Master is a text-based interactive fiction game released in 1982 for MS-DOS systems. Developed and published by Infocom, Inc., it is the third installment in the fantasy Zork series. The game continues the narrative of the previous titles, shifting its focus from a simple treasure hunt to a quest for succession within the game's fictional world.

Players resume the role of the adventurer from the earlier games, with the primary objective of proving themselves worthy to become the next Dungeon Master. This involves exploring environments like the Endless Stair and navigating areas such as the Land of Shadow, the Cliff, and the Flathead Ocean. Gameplay centers on solving intricate puzzles, managing a specific set of items, and interacting with non-player characters to progress. Key systems include inventory management, as players must locate and correctly use items like an amulet, a cloak, a staff, a strange key, a royal ring, and a black book. The game also introduces a timed event in the form of a randomly triggered earthquake, which permanently alters certain locations and gates progression, requiring players to sequence their actions carefully.

Progression is largely non-linear, with players completing various tasks across different regions to assemble the required items. In the final stages, the player must present themselves fully equipped at the Dungeon Master's door. The concluding puzzle involves manipulating a dial on a parapet to locate a bronze door leading to the Treasury of Zork, with the assistance of the Dungeon Master character. Successfully solving this final challenge completes the player's journey and concludes the narrative arc of the trilogy.
