Xargon is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer released for MS-DOS in 1993. It was developed and published by Epic MegaGames, Inc. The game follows the story of an archaeologist named Malvineous Havershim who is transported to a hostile fantasy world after an encounter with ancient ruins.

Players control Malvineous as he navigates a series of side-scrolling stages. The primary objective is to progress through the levels, overcoming environmental hazards and enemies, with the ultimate goal of confronting the tyrannical ruler Xargon. The character is initially equipped with a basic laser gun. This weapon can be aimed slightly upward or downward, and its capabilities are expanded by collecting power-ups found in the stages or by purchasing upgrades. Progression involves platforming challenges, combat against various foes, and the collection of emeralds which serve as the game's currency.

These emeralds allow access to a store that can be visited at any time, provided the player has accumulated enough. In the store, players can exchange emeralds for items such as health restoratives, temporary invincibility power-ups, and permanent weapon enhancements, including rapid-fire modes or limited-use projectile attacks. The game structure involves moving through discrete levels, managing resources like health and ammunition, and utilizing the upgrades obtained to tackle increasingly complex platforming and combat scenarios.
