Witchaven is a first-person fantasy action game released in 1995 for MS-DOS. Developed by Capstone Software and published by IntraCorp, Inc., it utilizes the Build engine to present a medieval setting where players assume the role of a knight on a quest to stop a witch. The game blends the perspective and real-time combat of a first-person shooter with fantasy themes and light role-playing mechanics.

The player controls Grondoval, a knight from Stazhia who must travel to the Island of Char to confront the witch Illwhyrin. The primary objective is to fight through the witch's stronghold, known as the Witchaven, defeating her demonic minions and ultimately facing her to prevent her from opening a portal to a demonic world. Progression is structured through a series of interconnected levels that the player explores, finding keys and solving environmental puzzles to advance. Gameplay involves real-time melee and ranged combat against various monsters, with a focus on collecting different weapons and magical scrolls.

Two central gameplay systems are the combat arsenal and the experience level progression. Players can acquire and use a variety of medieval weapons including swords, axes, bows, and halberds. Magical abilities, such as casting fireballs or gaining temporary invisibility, are accessed via scrolls found throughout the levels. These spells and some of the more powerful weapons have requirements tied to a character level system. The player gains experience points by defeating enemies and collecting certain items, which allows Grondoval to advance through several levels, increasing his power and unlocking access to stronger capabilities for the challenges ahead.
