About Wham!
Wham! is a top-down arcade shooter released in 1998 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by Avalanche Games, it is designed primarily as a fast-paced two-player experience. Players can compete against each other using a split-screen display or face a computer-controlled opponent in a series of confined cave environments.
In the game, each player controls a distinct spacecraft, maneuvering through tight, maze-like caves with the objective of destroying the other ship. The selection of spacecraft offers variety, as some models are faster but more fragile, while others are slower but possess greater durability and firepower. Progression involves engaging in direct combat across a set of thirty different cave levels. Players utilize a main cannon and can collect various bonus items that modify their capabilities during a match.
The core gameplay systems focus on combat customization and arena design. A key feature is the extensive arsenal, which includes twelve types of main cannons and sixty unique special weapons. These special weapons offer a wide range of tactical options, balancing factors like raw power, firing speed, and accuracy; one variant even provides navigational assistance. Beyond combat, the game includes tools for players to design their own spacecraft or create entirely new cave levels, adding a layer of user-generated content to the experience.
