About Vlak
Vlak is a freeware puzzle game released in 1993 for MS-DOS systems. The title, which translates to "Train" from Czech, functions as a variation on the classic Snake gameplay concept. In this version, the player controls a locomotive instead of a snake, navigating enclosed environments to gather items.
The player directs a train through a series of room-like levels. The primary objective is to collect all the scattered pickups within a room, which include various objects such as animals, crowns, and apples. Each collected item causes a new wagon to be attached to the end of the train, increasing its length. The player must carefully maneuver the growing train to avoid colliding with walls, obstacles, or the train's own lengthening body. Upon collecting every item in a room, a yellow exit door appears, allowing progression to the next, typically more complex, level.
The game features fifty levels in total. A notable visual detail is that the appearance of each new wagon changes depending on the type of item that was collected to create it. The software is very compact, with the entire program occupying only 13 kilobytes of storage. The design includes an unlimited number of continues, allowing players to retry levels without restriction, and it does not track a traditional high score system.
