Ultima VI: The False Prophet is a role-playing game released in 1990 for MS-DOS, developed and published by ORIGIN Systems, Inc. The game is presented from a top-down perspective and continues the story of the Avatar, a heroic figure in the fantasy world of Britannia. Following events from earlier titles, the narrative begins with the Avatar being rescued from gargoyle captors, leading to a conflict where these creatures have occupied the land's sacred shrines.

Players control the Avatar and can recruit companions such as Iolo, Shamino, and Dupre to form a party. The primary objective involves exploring the world to understand the gargoyles' motives and working to establish peace between the two races. Progression is driven by completing quests, gathering information, and collecting specific items, with a significant emphasis on exploration and dialogue over combat. The game world is fully continuous, eliminating separate map screens and allowing seamless travel between all locations. Combat occurs directly within the exploration environment using a turn-based system, and players can split their party to control characters independently.

The interface combines keyboard commands with mouse-driven icons for interaction. Players can manipulate a wide variety of objects in the detailed world, adding them to an inventory. Conversations are extensive, with numerous topics that can be unique to individual characters, and important keywords are highlighted to guide dialogue choices, which are typically typed by the player. While the main story requires following specific quests, the open structure permits visiting locations in any order, and experienced players may find ways to bypass certain story elements. The FM Towns version of the game features full voice acting for all dialogue in both English and Japanese.
