Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss is a fantasy role-playing game released in 1992 for MS-DOS. Developed by Blue Sky Productions and published by ORIGIN Systems, Inc., it presents a first-person perspective adventure set in a three-dimensional dungeon environment. The narrative follows the Avatar, a returning hero who is falsely accused of a kidnapping upon arriving in Britannia and is cast into a vast subterranean prison known as the Stygian Abyss.

Players control the Avatar, whose initial gender, character class, and starting skills are customizable. The primary objective is to explore the multi-level dungeon to clear the Avatar's name, a task that involves navigating a non-linear environment filled with slopes, waterways, and bridges. Gameplay combines real-time exploration, where the player can move freely, look up and down, jump, and swim, with an action-oriented combat system. Combat requires manually aiming a cursor at enemies and holding it to build attack strength, with different cursor positions enabling varied attack types like jabs or slashes. Progression is supported by a skill system where abilities such as lockpicking or weapon use improve by spending experience points at shrines, and a magic system based on collecting and combining runes found throughout the dungeon.

Interaction with the dungeon's inhabitants, which include both monsters and survivors of a failed colony, is a key component. Players can engage in conversations with non-player characters and make choices that influence these interactions. An automapping feature tracks explored areas and allows for personal annotations. While the world is open for exploration in a largely non-linear fashion, advancing the story requires completing specific objectives related to the central mystery of the kidnapping.
