Top Gun: Danger Zone is a combat flight simulator released in 1991 for MS-DOS. Developed by Distinctive Software and published by Konami, the game is based on the 1986 film and presents a first person perspective of aerial combat. Players take on the role of a naval aviator operating from the USS Brigham, an aircraft carrier stationed in the waters near Libya and the Middle East.

The player selects either an F-14 Tomcat, which includes a virtual Radar Intercept Officer, or a solo-piloted F-18 Hornet. The primary gameplay involves completing a set of eight mission types, which include intercepting enemy aircraft, escorting friendly units, clearing designated airspace, providing close air support, and running interference. Progression is structured around these missions. An additional mode called the Top Gun Challenge Board is accessible in the virtual Officer's Mess, where the player can engage in twelve simulated one on one dogfights against other pilots to improve skills and raise their ranking. The game supports both single player action against the CPU and a two player split screen mode for competitive matches.

The flight model is designed with an arcade style approach, prioritizing simplicity and accessibility over full realism. Alongside the core combat and flight mechanics, the game incorporates character development elements commonly found in role playing games, allowing the pilot's standing and reputation to grow based on performance.
