A core objective is to safely navigate the castle's rooms and corridors while protecting Tom, who follows nearby. The boy has his own needs; his energy depletes over time and must be restored with items like Hamburgers and Milkshakes, while a Teddy Bear can be given to improve his mood if he becomes upset. Tom can assist in confronting monsters, but his well-being must be constantly monitored. Progression relies heavily on locating and managing a variety of items scattered throughout the environment, including weapons, a magic harp, and a lighter, which are used to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles.

The castle contains many large doors that conceal various contents, such as bonus items, hostile creatures, or clues necessary for solving riddles. Players must explore these areas, combat or evade numerous enemies that seek to drain life energy, and ensure Tom does not become lost or overly frightened. A whistle can be used to call Tom back if he wanders too far. The game structure involves systematically searching the castle, combining and using collected items appropriately, and managing Tom's condition, all while working against the time limit to find his mother and stop the sorcerer's plans.
