The Great Giana Sisters is a side-scrolling platform game released for MS-DOS in 1987. Developed by Time Warp Productions and published by Rainbow Arts Software GmbH, the game is set in a fantasy dreamworld. Players control either Giana or her sister Maria, with an alternating two-player mode available.

In the game, the player guides the character through 32 distinct levels. The primary objective is to navigate these stages, defeat various enemies, and ultimately locate a magic diamond that will allow for a return to the normal world. Progression involves moving from left to right across the screen, avoiding environmental hazards like bottomless pits, water, and fire. The player collects dream crystals scattered throughout the levels, which contribute to the score and can grant extra lives. Stages are divided into two main types: overworld areas with green scenery and pipe-like objects, and more hazardous underground areas that feature additional obstacles and boss encounters.

Gameplay systems include combat and the use of power-up items. Enemies, such as owls, rolling eyeballs, and insects, can be defeated by jumping on them or by shooting them after acquiring specific power-ups. These items are found in blocks within the stages and grant temporary abilities. For example, the Fire Wheel allows the character to crush rocks from below, while the Lightning Bolt provides a projectile attack. Other items, like the Clock which freezes on-screen enemies or Magic Bombs that eliminate them, offer screen-wide effects. Hidden warp blocks and lollipop items that grant extra lives are also present, adding elements of exploration and collection to the platforming action.
