About The Gene Machine
The Gene Machine is a point and click adventure game released in 1996 for MS-DOS. Developed by Divide By Zero, Ltd. and published by Vic Tokai, Inc., it is a 2D game that uses background art to create a sense of three-dimensional space. The narrative is set in London during the 1880s and follows the gentleman Piers Featherstonehaugh and his servant Mossop.
Players control Piers from a third person perspective as he investigates a conspiracy involving genetic mutations, a plot revealed by a talking cat encountered at his home. The primary objective is to uncover and stop the scheme, which requires traveling to various global and extraordinary locations. Throughout this journey, Piers interacts with a wide array of characters, including both people and talking animals, to gather information and progress the story.
Gameplay centers on exploration and puzzle solving. Players navigate through pre rendered scenes, examining environments and collecting numerous inventory items. Solving puzzles typically involves the logical combination and use of these found objects. The game structure advances the player through a sequence of locations tied to the unfolding narrative, with progression dependent on successfully resolving these item based challenges.
