The Elder Scrolls: Arena is a first-person role-playing game released for MS-DOS in 1994. Developed and published by Bethesda Softworks, it serves as the inaugural entry in The Elder Scrolls series, establishing the fictional continent of Tamriel as its setting. The game presents its world through three-dimensional environments, with characters and enemies depicted as two-dimensional sprites.

Players create a single character by selecting from various races, each associated with a home province and granting specific statistical advantages, such as the Redguards' proficiency in physical combat. The core objective involves a quest to reassemble the eight pieces of the Staff of Chaos, guided by the spirit of the usurper Jagar Tharn's slain apprentice, in order to restore the rightful emperor. Progression is achieved by accumulating experience points to level up, at which point players can freely distribute points to improve the character's core attributes, as the game does not feature a formal skill system. Exploration is a central pillar, allowing travel across nearly the entire continent with over four hundred settlements to discover, alongside wilderness and dungeons. While the overworld is vast and features procedurally generated terrain when traveling on foot, visiting specific distant cities requires the use of a fast travel map feature.

Gameplay involves real-time, first-person interaction with the world. Melee combat is executed through directional mouse gestures, while magic is cast via a menu interface. Players will encounter enemies in the wild and in dungeons that must be defeated, often yielding loot. Within towns and cities, non-player characters can be engaged for trade, information, or other services. Although the main narrative follows a linear sequence to its conclusion, the placement of many key items is randomized at the start of each new game, adding variability to each playthrough.
