About The Backyard
The Backyard is an educational software title released in 1993 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed and published by Brøderbund Software, it is designed for preschool-aged children. This title is the third entry in a trilogy of toddler-focused games, following The Playroom and The Treehouse.
In the game, children interact with a static scene depicting a child's backyard. The player uses a mouse or keyboard to click on various objects and characters within this environment. Each interaction triggers a specific activity or a simple animated sequence. The software structures these activities around foundational learning concepts, including recognizing numbers and letters, identifying animals, and understanding basic map reading. Another focus is on associating words with corresponding facial expressions.
Progression is open-ended and exploratory, with no set objectives or failure states. The design allows young users to freely discover and repeat activities at their own pace. The primary gameplay systems involve point-and-click exploration to reveal interactive elements, followed by engagement with the brief educational minigames or animations that each clickable item provides. This structure aims to foster early computer literacy and cognitive development through self-directed play.
