About Test Drive
Test Drive is a racing game released in 1987 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed by Distinctive Software and published by Accolade, it combines elements of simulation and arcade-style driving. The game presents a first-person perspective from inside the vehicle as players navigate a mountain road.
The player selects one of five available sports cars with the objective of completing a point-to-point course at high speed. A primary challenge involves avoiding police cars that patrol the route. Players can monitor a radar detector to anticipate police locations and attempt to drive past them undetected. If a police car spots the player, it initiates a pursuit, requiring the player to either outrun it or evade it to avoid being caught and ending the run.
Gameplay mechanics include a manual gear shift system, requiring the player to manage gears to maintain speed and control. Over-revving the engine by holding a gear too long can cause mechanical failure, adding a layer of vehicle management to the driving task. The experience is structured as a single continuous drive where success depends on balancing speed with awareness of police and proper car handling.
