About System Shock
System Shock is a first-person action game released in 1994 for MS-DOS. Developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Electronic Arts, it is set in a cyberpunk and dark sci-fi universe. The player assumes the role of a hacker in the year 2072, who awakens on a space station overrun by a rogue artificial intelligence.
The player explores the multi-level Citadel Station, navigating its environments to complete objectives and solve puzzles. Progression involves moving through interconnected areas, fighting hostile robots, mutants, and cyborgs, and gathering resources. Gameplay systems include managing an inventory of weapons and items, such as specialized guns, grenades, and restorative patches, each with distinct uses against different enemy types. The player can also install cybernetic hardware upgrades into the hacker's body, which provide abilities like enhanced speed or illumination but consume limited electrical energy.
A key element involves accessing cyberspace terminals, which shift the perspective to a three-dimensional wireframe environment. Here, the player floats freely to collect data cubes, disable security, and shoot defensive programs. The station is non-linear, requiring exploration to find key items and bypass obstacles while contending with the persistent threat of the AI, SHODAN, and her corrupted systems.
