Super Contra is a side view arcade style run and gun game released for MS-Dos in 1990. It was developed by Konami Industry Co. Ltd. and published by Konami, Inc. The game continues the conflict against the alien force known as Red Falcon, which has returned with plans to conquer Earth. Players take on the roles of soldiers Scorpion and Mad Dog, who must fight through the invasion across five distinct levels.

Players control one of the two commandos, navigating side scrolling environments filled with enemy soldiers, alien creatures, and mechanical obstacles. The primary objective is to advance through each stage, defeating all hostile forces and confronting a boss character at the end of each level to ultimately save the planet. Progression is linear, with the game demanding quick reflexes to avoid enemy fire and environmental hazards. The core gameplay involves running, jumping, and shooting, with a focus on constant action and precise movement to survive the relentless enemy assaults.

The arsenal includes returning weapons from the original Contra, though the Fire weapon operates with completely new mechanics. Players obtain these weapon upgrades by shooting down floating pods that move across the upper part of the screen at specific points in each level. These pods can also release other power ups, such as a temporary shield that grants invincibility and a screen clearing bomb that eliminates all visible enemies. This system of collecting power ups during combat is integral to managing the game's challenges and firepower throughout the mission.
