About Strife
Strife is a first-person shooter released in 1996 for MS-DOS. Developed by Rogue Entertainment and published by Velocity Inc., the game utilizes the Doom engine. It is set in a future where a tyrannical organization known as The Order controls a devastated Earth, and the player assumes the role of a wanderer recruited by a rebel faction aiming to overthrow this regime.
The player navigates the world from a first-person perspective, engaging in combat against The Order's forces using an arsenal of projectile and energy weapons. Progression is not strictly linear; instead, the game world is largely continuous, centered around a town hub. From this hub, the player accepts missions, explores environments, and interacts with non-hostile characters. These interactions include conversing with townspeople for information, purchasing new equipment from stores, and visiting taverns to hear rumors. The player can also acquire permanent upgrades to increase their character's maximum health.
The game's structure blends mission-based objectives with exploration, allowing players to revisit areas. The narrative features branching paths determined by key decisions made during the story, leading to one of three possible conclusions. This plot-driven approach integrates the mission objectives and character interactions directly into the overarching goal of dismantling The Order's control.
