The player controls Drake, whose spirit has been separated from his body to explore the ruins of Stonekeep. His primary objectives are to confront his past and find a method to free the realm's benevolent gods. Combat unfolds in real time, with the left and right mouse buttons typically corresponding to attacks from Drake's respective hands. Drake is initially joined by up to three computer-controlled companions who assist in these encounters.

Character progression is tied to weapon use, as Drake's proficiency with a specific weapon type increases through repeated combat. The magic system is based on collecting runes and equipping them onto staves to cast spells. Players can also combine different spells to create various offensive and supportive effects. The game uses digitized photographs and animations of live actors to portray characters and creatures throughout the adventure.
