Star Wars: X-Wing is a space combat simulation released for MS-DOS in 1993. Developed and published by LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC, it is a first-person licensed title set in the Star Wars universe. The game places players in the role of a pilot for the Rebel Alliance, flying iconic starfighters against the forces of the Galactic Empire.

Players control one of three Rebel starfighters: the X-Wing, Y-Wing, or A-Wing, each with distinct flight characteristics and weapon loadouts suited to different mission types. Progression is structured around three main campaigns, called Tours of Duty, which follow the Rebel Alliance's escalating conflict with the Empire and culminate in the attack on the Death Star. Each tour consists of numerous missions with varied objectives, including strike operations, escort duties, reconnaissance, and ship capture. Before undertaking these campaigns, players complete training exercises and simulated historical missions to learn flight controls and combat systems. A key gameplay mechanic is energy management, requiring pilots to dynamically allocate power between engines, weapons, and shields during flight, which directly affects ship performance and survivability.

The game world features a variety of spacecraft from the Star Wars films, such as Imperial TIE Fighters and Star Destroyers, as well as Rebel capital ships. Players often encounter these vessels in combat and may be supported by friendly fighters that can receive basic orders. Mission objectives are advanced through animated cutscenes that continue the narrative between operations. The simulation focuses on cockpit-based combat, utilizing a polygonal 3D engine for the spacecraft and environments, with bitmap effects for elements like explosions.
