Star Wars: TIE Fighter is a space flight simulation game released in 1994 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC, it is a science fiction title set within the Star Wars universe. The game serves as a follow-up to the earlier X-Wing, placing players in the role of a pilot serving the Galactic Empire.

Players control a series of Imperial starfighters, progressing through seven campaigns that encompass over fifty missions. The primary perspective is first-person, with an optional third-person view. Gameplay involves executing various mission roles such as dogfighting enemy craft, escorting friendly vessels, inspecting suspicious ships, and attacking large capital ships or space stations. A detailed narrative is conveyed through cutscenes that drive the storyline forward. Players begin in unshielded TIE fighters and gradually gain access to more advanced models like the TIE Interceptor and TIE Advanced, which feature shields and improved weaponry.

Core gameplay systems focus on spacecraft management and combat. Players must actively balance power allocation between engines, lasers, and shields in real time to optimize performance and survivability. Offensive capabilities include short-range laser and ion cannons, which can be set to different firing modes, and limited warheads on some craft. The targeting system allows players to lock onto specific components of larger vessels, such as shield generators. When a ship is equipped with shields, players can adjust their balance between the front and rear. Hull damage from enemy fire can disable various systems, which then repair slowly in a player-selectable order. Missions can be reattempted if failed, though success is recorded if primary objectives are completed before the player's craft is destroyed. Additional in-game features include accessible mission objective status and a log of flight communications.
