Star Wars: Dark Forces is a first-person shooter released in 1995 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by LucasArts, it is a licensed title set in the Star Wars universe, taking place shortly before the events of the original film trilogy. The game follows the mercenary Kyle Katarn, who is hired by the Rebel Alliance to investigate the destruction of a secret base, a mission that brings him into conflict with Imperial General Rom Mohc and his Dark Trooper project.

Players control Kyle Katarn from a first-person perspective across fourteen missions. The primary objective is to dismantle the Dark Trooper initiative, with each level presenting specific goals such as retrieving data, planting explosives, or escaping a facility. Progression is structured through these distinct missions, which are connected by narrative cutscenes. Gameplay involves navigating complex, often maze-like environments, using a variety of blasters and other weapons to fight Imperial forces and droids. Players must also interact with switches to alter level layouts, use jumping to access areas, and manage inventory items like protective shields and a head lamp for dark sections. The game tracks progress with a lives system per level, and saving is only possible between missions.

The levels are designed with multiple objectives, a feature that distinguished it from many contemporary shooters. Environments frequently reference locations and characters from the Star Wars films, including visits to Jabba the Hutt's palace and operations aboard a Star Destroyer. The game was built on LucasArts' proprietary Jedi engine, which supported technical features like the ability to look up and down, crouch, and jump, as well as limited multi-level room structures. Occasional 3D models, such as turrets and spacecraft, appear within the environments.
