About Space Ace (dos)
Space Ace is a 16-bit computer adaptation of the laserdisc arcade game, released for MS-DOS in 1989. Developed and published by ReadySoft Incorporated, it is a science fiction action title that utilizes full motion video. The game is a third-person experience that recreates selected scenes from the original animated source, with all graphics redrawn to suit the technical capabilities of home computers at the time.
The player interacts with an unfolding animated cartoon, which plays continuously. The core gameplay involves pressing the correct button at precise moments, such as moving the protagonist or firing his weapon, to progress. Failure to input the correct command results in one of numerous death animations, causing the scene to restart. The player controls either the hero Ace or his younger, less capable form Dexter, depending on the specific scene. The structure is linear, with progression tied to successfully navigating these timed sequences.
This computer version simplifies the branching path structure of the arcade original. In that version, players could occasionally choose to transform Dexter back into Ace, altering the subsequent challenges. Here, the character controlled is predetermined for each scene, removing that element of choice. The gameplay systems are therefore focused entirely on reaction-based inputs and memorization of scene events to advance through the story.
