I first played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis, which Sega developed and published themselves. It came out when the 16-bit console competition was really heating up, and this sequel felt like a direct answer to what players wanted after the first game.

You control Sonic, and often his new friend Tails, as you run through vibrant levels to stop Dr. Robotnik from building the Death Egg space station. The main goal is to get through each zone, defeat the boss, and collect the Chaos Emeralds. Two big changes were the addition of the spin dash, which lets you rev up and blast off from a standstill, and the two-player competitive mode where a friend could race alongside you. The levels are much faster and more expansive than in the original, with loops and corkscrews that make the speed feel incredible, though some of the later stages get pretty tough. The whole experience is a rush of momentum and precision that just feels great to control.
