You control Sonic, and sometimes Tails, as you run through heavily altered versions of the classic zones. The main objective is still to defeat Dr. Robotnik, but the path there is completely different. The game's signature mechanics involve navigating new level layouts with precision platforming and managing the occasional special stage to collect Chaos Emeralds. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is notably high, demanding quick reflexes and careful memorization of enemy placements and new stage gimmicks.
