Players assume the role of Jak Ohmsford, whose father was a hero who previously defeated the warlock Brona. Informed by the druid Allanon that Brona has returned, Jak must journey across a world map to visit the lands of various races. His objective is to unite these factions against the common threat, a quest that involves making consequential decisions and engaging with numerous characters through extended conversation trees with multiple dialogue options. Progression is handled through a screen-by-screen navigation system rather than continuous movement, and the player manages an inventory used to solve environmental puzzles.

The gameplay incorporates some role-playing game concepts, including a top-down world map for travel and occasional turn-based combat encounters. These battles are not governed by a statistical role-playing system with experience points, but instead often function as story events or puzzle-like scenarios where specific actions determine success. Jak is accompanied by a party of other characters, each possessing unique inventory items and abilities that are required to overcome certain obstacles and progress through the adventure.
