Rise of the Triad: The HUNT Begins is a first-person shooter released in 1994 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by Apogee Software, Ltd., this game serves as the initial shareware episode of the larger Dark War series. Players assume the role of Taradino Cassatt, an operative of the High-risk United Nations Taskforce, or HUNT.

The objective is to infiltrate a fortified island base in the Gulf of Santa Catalina, which is controlled by the cult of El Oscuro, and dismantle their operations. The player navigates through a series of levels, controlling Cassatt from a first-person perspective. Progression involves moving through environments, engaging enemies in combat, and overcoming various traps and obstacles. The shareware episode is structured to demonstrate a range of gameplay elements, including a sample of the weapons, enemy types, and items that appear more fully in later episodes. It features ten single-player levels, comprising seven standard stages, one secret level, and two additional levels accessible only through a specific cheat code.

Beyond the single-player campaign, the game includes eight levels designed for online multiplayer. Three distinct multiplayer modes, collectively called Comm-Bat, are available: Normal, Score Mode, and Collector. A notable feature is that players using this shareware version can compete online against others who own the full Dark War game. The episode functions as an introductory showcase, presenting a substantial portion of the game's core systems and content to players.
