Players control Rick Dangerous, an explorer tasked with stopping a villain known as the Fat Guy, who aims to help an alien race take over the world. The journey progresses through a series of distinct environments, including Hyde Park, ice caverns on the planet Freezia, a deep forest, and atomic mud mines. The first four of these levels can be tackled in any order the player chooses. Upon completing all four, a fifth and final level set in the Fat Guy's Headquarters is unlocked, culminating in a boss encounter. This final stage can be replayed, though a concluding sequence only triggers if all five levels are finished in a single ordered sequence.

Gameplay involves navigating platforms, climbing ladders, and crawling through tight spaces while avoiding various enemies such as robots, penguins, and nomads. Rick is equipped with a laser gun, which is fired in an upward arc, and a limited supply of bombs. These bombs can be placed directly or slid along the ground in a specified direction, allowing for strategic placement to clear obstacles or defeat foes. In place of a pogo stick from the previous game, Rick can now execute a punch attack. Certain areas also feature a special flying vehicle for faster traversal, though its use introduces additional hazards. Success relies on solving environmental puzzles, memorizing the placement of traps and enemy patterns, and precise timing with the available tools.
