Return of the Phantom is a third-person graphic adventure game released in 1993 for MS-DOS. Developed by MPS Labs and published by MicroProse Software, it is a point and click adventure that adapts Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera. The game blends detective and mystery genres with puzzle-solving elements, set primarily within the Palais Garnier opera house.

The player controls detective Raoul Montand, who is summoned by the opera house manager to investigate a disaster. The narrative is set in 1993, where a chandelier collapse has caused fatalities during a performance. The detective's objective is to uncover clues to prevent further terror, which is attributed to the legendary Phantom said to have haunted the location since 1881. Gameplay involves exploring the opera house and its subterranean tunnels, interacting with the environment through a verb-based command menu. Players select actions like Look, Talk, Take, and Push, applying them to objects and characters to gather information and solve logical puzzles. Progression is story-driven, with the investigation requiring players to piece together clues in the present day and also experience events from 1881 to understand the Phantom's history.

The game's structure is linear, advancing as puzzles are solved and key story dialogues are completed. Exploration is central, with the detailed environments of the opera house and its secret passages serving as the primary setting for interaction. The CD version of the game includes voiced dialogue for characters. The player's tasks consistently focus on detective work, examining scenes, conversing with individuals connected to the opera, and using inventory items in combination with the environment to unlock new areas and narrative developments.
