Reaping the Dungeon is a turn-based roguelike game released in 1993 for MS-DOS. Developed by Frontline Software, it presents a science fiction scenario where the player descends beneath the surface of Jupiter to confront a malfunctioning machine that has flooded subterranean tunnels with synthetic creatures. The game was initially distributed with a freeware episode titled The Weapon Recovery, containing 15 levels, followed by a purchasable second episode called The Machine, which adds 50 more levels to the adventure.

Players control a character navigating a series of dungeon levels from a top-down perspective. The primary objectives are to explore each level, collect treasure, and ultimately locate and destroy the central machine. Progression involves finding a drop shaft that leads to the next level, which periodically relocates, requiring players to discover and tag it using data chips found throughout the environment. Gameplay systems include combat conducted in a simple hit versus hit manner against various creatures, and resource management where precious metals and gems can be sold in shops to acquire better weapons and equipment. Defeated enemies yield raw crystals used to permanently improve character attributes such as damage output, sight range, and movement speed.

The game incorporates several distinctive mechanics. Each step consumes oxygen from a limited pool, making inefficient exploration hazardous. Resources like health, energy, and oxygen can be harvested from cell plants that grow in a five stage life cycle, requiring careful timing for optimal collection. A magic system is based on rare mushrooms that grant temporary special abilities, such as walking through walls or enhanced vision, for a limited number of turns. All level layouts, along with their contents including new enemy types and map features, are procedurally generated for each playthrough. The presentation uses customized 16 color ASCII character graphics and sound effects produced through the PC speaker.
