About Pitstop Ii
Pitstop II is a racing video game released in 1984 for MS-DOS systems. Developed by Synergistic Software and published by Epyx, Inc., it is an arcade-style automobile and track racing game that simulates aspects of professional motorsport. A notable technical feature for its time was the inclusion of a split-screen mode that allowed two players to race simultaneously, with each screen showing an independent view of the track based on their car's position.
Players control a race car from a behind-view perspective, competing on one of six licensed international circuits, including Brands Hatch and Watkins Glen. The primary objective is to complete a chosen race distance of three, six, or nine laps faster than the opponent or computer-controlled rivals. Beyond simply driving, the game requires managing the car's condition, as players must monitor a depleting fuel gauge and tire wear during the race. This management is a core gameplay system, necessitating strategic pit stops where players can refuel and change tires to maintain performance. The game offers three difficulty levels, affecting the challenge of opponent AI and perhaps the rate of resource consumption, structuring progression through repeated races on different tracks.
