Players oversee a procession of small characters, known as Lemmings, who march automatically across side-view landscapes. The primary objective is to guide a required number of them safely to each level's exit point. To achieve this, players assign specific skills to individual Lemmings from a limited pool, such as blocking paths, digging, building stairs, or using parachutes. The game is structured into five distinct categories of escalating complexity: Tame, Crazy, Wild, Wicked, and Havoc. Each category contains twenty levels, requiring strategic planning and careful resource management to solve the environmental puzzles in real time.

Progression is linear through the categories, with success in one level unlocking the next. The core challenge involves analyzing the terrain, anticipating the default path of the Lemmings, and applying the correct skills at precise moments to alter their route. The gameplay systems focus entirely on this strategic allocation of abilities under time pressure, without direct control over character movement.
