Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a side-view action-adventure game released for MS-DOS in 1997. It was developed by Oddworld Inhabitants Inc. and published by GT Interactive Software Corp. The game follows the character Abe, a Mudokon, who is a member of an enslaved race forced to work for the industrial Glukkons.

Players control Abe, who is largely defenseless and cannot use conventional weapons. The primary objective is to guide him through a series of industrial environments to escape captivity and expose a dark secret about his people. Gameplay revolves around careful platforming, precise timing, and stealth to avoid or outmaneuver hostile guards. Abe can run, jump, climb, and crouch to navigate the pre-rendered environments. To overcome enemies, players must use environmental interaction, such as throwing objects to create distractions or luring foes into traps. In some sections, Abe can ride a creature named Elum to traverse certain areas more quickly.

Key mechanics include a chanting ability, which allows Abe to temporarily stun specific enemies or take possession of them. Controlling a possessed enemy grants access to its weapons and abilities, which can be used to solve puzzles or eliminate threats. A major secondary goal involves rescuing other enslaved Mudokons. To do this, Abe must locate them and use a verbal command system called Gamespeak to issue instructions like "Follow me" or "Wait." Rescued Mudokons are led to safety through magical portals opened by chanting. The number of Mudokons saved influences the game's conclusion. The narrative is advanced between levels with computer generated cinematic sequences that match the game's visual style.
